Well versed in both jazz and classical styles, Paul Haar has distinguished himself as one of the nations top young saxophonists. He has received national attention in Downbeat magazine (as a recipient of 7 Downbeat "DB" awards), Jazz Times, and the International Association of Jazz Educators Journal. He has played with such artists as The Temptations, The Chiffons, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Jim McNeely, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Dave Brubeck, and has recorded on the Sea Breeze Label with vocalist Kevin Mahagony and saxophonist Eric Marienthal.

As a classical saxophonist he has performed with the Tanglewood Fellowship Orchestra, the Araphoe Philharmonic, and The Austin Symphony. He has been a member of the Elision saxophone quartet, founded a saxophone quartet under his own name, and is one half of the Paul Haar/Jeff Hellmer Duo. A tireless proponent of new works for the saxophone, he has commissioned works from some of the countries finest composers.

As an active educator, Mr. Haar has taught at the University of Kansas, The University of Texas at Austin, and is currently the Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Sonata by Jack Cooper is being commissioned for a performance at the 12th World Saxophone Congress. Written exclusively for the Paul Haar/Jeff Hellmer duo, Sonata explores the many tonal colors that the saxophone possesses, the interaction of a soloist and a collaborative artist, and the duality of jazz and classical in the saxophone's world. The piece will explore Mr. Haar and Mr. Hellmer's ability to play classical and jazz styling. Mr. Cooper is a renowned jazz composer, writing for the Warner Bros. Company. In addition to his life as a composer, he is also on faculty at The University of Memphis.

Leslie Hogan's new work is also in the planning stages and was commissioned for a performance at the 12th World Saxophone Congress. This work, planned to be a possible Sonata or Concerto, will explore the range of the saxophone, the colors of the saxophone, and the idiomatic style that Mr. Haar possesses on the instrument.. Ms. Hogan is an active composer and the composer of Spin Cycle for alto saxophone and piano and is currently at The University of California, Santa Barbara.
