Evan Chambers

Evan Chambers joined the faculty in 1993 as assistant professor of composition and director of the electronic music studios. He graduated with highest honors from the University of Michigan, where he received a doctor of musical arts and master of music in composition; he also holds a bachelor of music in viola performance from Bowling Green State University.

Mr. Chambers has received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Society of University Composers, NACUSA and the Tampa Bay Composers Forum. His work has been recognized in the International Luigi Russolo Competition, the Vienna Modern Masters Orchestral Competition and the Bowling Green Competition in Music Composition. In 1991 he was twice awarded first prize in the Cincinnati Symphony Young Composers' Competition in conjunction with the premiere of his orchestral work Garden of Stones. His acoustic and electronic music has been performed both internationally and throughout the United States, including at the World Saxophone Congress, Festival at Sandpoint, the North-South Consonance series in New York, the Subtropics New Music Festival, the Bowling Green New Music and Arts Festival and national conventions of the Society of Composers and the Society for Electroacoustic Music.

Recently he has received commissions to compose chamber works for members of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Greene String Quartet and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. His works are recorded on the Cambria label and by the Foundation Russolo-Pratella.

Mr. Chambers is also an active Irish traditional fiddler, with continuing research interests in Scottish and Irish traditional music. He previously served as assistant director of the New Music and Arts Festival at Bowling Green State University.
