Kelland Thomas is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. Since his debut with the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 1993, he has performed as a soloist and with orchestras throughout the U.S. and in Ontario, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. He was a top prize winner in such national competitions as the Ima Hogg Young Artists Competition and the Lansing Matinee Musicale. In 1997, he completed a seven-city performance tour of Japan with world-renowned marimbist Keiko Abe and the Michigan Chamber Players.

An active proponent of new music, he has commissioned and/or premiered over twenty new works for saxophone to date, including pieces by Gunther Schuller, Brian Ferneyhough, Andrew Mead, Richard Burkhardt, and Benjamin Broening. He has recorded Luciano Berio's Sequenza IXB for Mode Records, and can be heard on the Albany label performing David Maslanka's Hell's Gate with the University of Arizona Wind Ensemble.

Kelland Thomas performs regularly with various chamber groups, including the Resounding Winds Saxophone Quartet, the Michigan Saxophone Quartet with Donald Sinta, and the Michigan Chamber Players. He has performed with the natianally acclaimed PRISM Quartet and is a former member of the award-winning Borealis Saxophone Quartet. Dr. Thomas is hosting the North American Saxophone Alliance National Biennial Conference in March of 2000. He received the degree Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan, where he also received a Master of Music in Music Theory. His principal teachers have included Donald Sinta, Joseph Lulloff, and James Forger.

The Trio promises to be a virtuosic piece, and will be an exciting addition to the small body of repertoire for saxophone and stringed instruments.
