She Sings, She Screams

[saxophone alto et bande DAT / alto saxophone and DAT tape]

Mark Engebretson writes about his composition:

"She Sings, She Screams for alto saxophone and tape was commissioned by Susan Fancher, with financial support from the Austrian Ministry of Culture. The premiere was given on February 18, 1995 by Ms. Fancher at a Kulturspektakel concert in the Stadtinitiative in Vienna. This piece represents my first work created in my own electronic music studio. It was created using a Korg 05R/w synthesizer and Cubase sequenzer. The work is made of three large sections (or arcs) of increasing intensity, with a short coda. The piece reflects my increasing interest in melody (in particular, melody using quarter-tones) and musical motion."

Scotty Stepp is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts with Debra Richtmeyer at University of Illinois. Scotty completed his Master of Art in Saxophone Performance at Bowling Green State University under the tutelage of John Sampen. He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana State University from 1992-1996 where he studied with Paul Bro.

His solo saxophone experiences include first prize winner at the 1998 National Saxophone Competition of the North American Saxophone Alliance, semi-finalist at the 1998 2nd International Adolphe Sax Competition, finalist in the 1999 Crane Festival of NEWMUSIC competition, second prize winner at the 1998 Ohio Federation Music Club woodwind division, and 1993-1994 ISU concerto winner. He has performed with the Toledo, Canton, and Terre Haute Symphony Orchestras and recently joined the internationally acclaimed Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet. He was a member of the Fourth Dimension Saxophone Quartet that performed at the 1996 National Fischoff Competition, 1996 North American Saxophone Alliance Convention at the University of Florida, and chosen as the only performing representative from ISU at the 1996 Indiana Music Educators Convention.
