The Regina Saxophone Quartet was founded in 1987 and still includes three of its original members. The quartet appears frequently throughout southern Saskatchewan, and has also performed in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Winnipeg. The Regina Saxophone Quartet has recorded for STV and CBC radio on a number of occasions. Quartet members include:
Karen Finnsson is currently Associate Professor of Music at the University of Regina where she teaches saxophone, music history and woodwind techniques. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria in saxophone performance and went on to complete a Master of Music degree at North Texas State University, majoring in saxophone performance/woodwinds. Ms. Finnsson is soprano saxophonist with the Regina Saxophone Quartet. She has played alto, tenor and soprano saxophones as well as clarinet with the Regina Symphony Orchestra and has recorded for CBC radio. Becky Pichurski is alto saxophonist with the Regina Saxophone Quartet. She recently received a BMus in saxophone performance from the University of Western Ontario and is currently completing requirements for her teaching certification at the University of Regina. Ms. Pichurski spent three summers performing with the Ceremonial Guard Marching Band in Ottawa. She currently is a saxophone instructor with the Regina Conservatory of Music and is teaching for local community bands. Chris Jacklin is a school band teacher at Greenall School in Balgonie, SK. He also teaches saxophone and jazz improvisation for the Regina Conservatory of Music. He has a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria, a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Regina and worked on a masters degree at North Texas State University. Chris plays tenor saxophone with the Regina Saxophone Quartet and has performed with the Regina Symphony on both tenor saxophone and bassoon. Chris also does a fair amount of jazz and rock performing in Saskatchewan, with such groups as the Regina Riot, Grand Central, the Helberg/Warner Band, the Bob Moyer Big Band and others. Arthur Neale, baritone saxophonist with the Regina Saxophone Quartet, completed his BMusEd at the University of Regina. Mr. Neale has taught both in the public school system and with community bands. He is an active freelance musician in the Regina area, performing regularly with groups such as the Helberg/Warner Band, the Bob Moyer Big Band and Jive Daddy & the Swing Kings. |

The Regina Saxophone Quartet has commissioned Thomas Schudel, Canadian composer and Professor of composition at the University of Regina, to write a piece for performance at the World Saxophone Congress. The piece, as yet untitled, is scored for saxophone quartet, percussion, trumpet and trombone.
Dr. Schudel has written a number of works for saxophone ensemble in recent years, including Pentagram (saxophone quartet, percussion), Trigon (two saxophonists and percussion) and Sinfonia Concertante (saxophone quartet, wind ensemble). He has also published several pieces for the younger saxophonist, including Two Images (alto sax / piano), Intrada (alto sax / piano), An Evening Stroll (alto sax / pno) and Gemini (saxophone duo). |
