Otis Murphy is completing his studies for a Doctor of Music degree at Indiana University where he is a pupil of the world-renowned saxophonist Eugene Rousseau. Also recipient of a Fulbright grant enabling work with Jean-Yves Fourmeau in Paris, Murphy has garnered a number of prizes and recognitions during his still budding career: Second Prize in the Adolphe Sax International Saxophone Competition (1998); Third Prize, Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition (1996); First Prize, Heida Hermanns Young Artist Competition; Second Prize, William Byrd Young Artist Competition; Second Prize, St. Louis Symphony Young Artist Competition; Finalist, Concert Artists Guild Competition.
In 1998, he became the first saxophonist in ten years to win the Indiana University Woodwind Concerto Competition. The resulting performance with the university's Philharmonic Orchestra brought these words of praise from the Bloomington Herald-Times: "Murphy drew not only sultry beauty from the instrument but showcase urgency. His playing was marked by clarity of enunciation and a clean precision of technique." Critical reaction to his playing in Dinant (in Vers L'Avenir) emphasized "his musicality and charisma." According to a review, he "played his program with the calm assurance of those who know themselves to be the best. His command...was of the utmost beauty." Murphy, an active soloist with orchestras and bands throughout the world, is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician. He teaches saxophone master classes all around the United States. |
