Joseph Murphy received a Doctor of Musical Arts from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois; June 1994, Dissertation: Early Saxophone Instruction in American Educational Institutions. Premier prix in saxophone, chamber music, and dechiffrage; National Conservatoire of Musique, Bordeaux, France; June 1986. Master of Music, Saxophone Performance, Northwestern University, June 1983, graduate assistant. Bachelor of Music Education (cum laude), Bowling Green State University (Ohio), June l982.

He is Associate Professor of Music at Mansfield University , Mansfield, Pennsylvania. He also taught Performance Studies at Bowling Green State University as a full time faculty (sabbatical replacement) in the Spring semester of 1987 and was musical director (instrumental, choral, theatre) at Tiffin Calvert High School

Other activities include teacher/performer at Taiwan Symphony Saxophone Camp in Taichung, Taiwan in August of 1997. Solo recital at the Bruno Walter Auditorium, Lincoln Center celebrating 150 years of the Saxophone in June 1996. He perforrned at 9th World Saxophone Congress, Tokyo, Japan .

He was second runner up at the National Association of Composers, USA Performers Competition, Los Angeles, California in May 1987, and was awarded a Fulbright Grant and Annette Kade Fellowship for study in Bordeaux, France; 1985-86.

He has commissioned and premiered works by Larry Bell, Brian Bevelander, James Crowley, John Harbison, Michael Horvit, Christian Lauba, Gustavo Leone, Kevin Maloney, Marilyn Shrude, Bruce Taub, Christopher Theofanidis and Peter Terry.

He has published pedagogical articles on the saxophone and has recorded on the Opus One, Orion, and Erol (France) labels. He is an educational clinician for the Selmer Corporation
