| Jazz Fugue is part of a series of crossover pieces for tenor saxophone and piano. The intention is to marry jazz melodies, rhythms and harmonies with more traditional forms and structures of baroque and classical music.
The Fugue develops as Bach may have developed it if he had been influenced by John Coltrane and Chick Corea. Nocturnal again seeks to investigate and develop the possibilities of Chamber Jazz. It uses a complex modal language to explore our imagined dream sleep; from the languorous to the tormented. |
Tony Davis and Andy Cholerton have been working together for a number of years developing and promoting cross-over Chamber Jazz for saxophone and piano. Their work seeks to combine the dliscipline of classical composition techniques together with the energy, language and freedom of jazz. They have given recitals throughout the UK and performed their Jazz Sonatas in the 11th World Saxophone Congress in Valencia.
As a member of the Northern Saxophone Quartet Tony has performed extensively throughout the UK and abroad including the 11th Saxophone Symposium (Massachusetts, USA), recital tours of Finland and the American Mid West and the 11th World Saxophone Congress in Valencia. He has also appeared as a soloist in the 1990, '92, '94, and '96 British Saxophone Congresses and in 1998 appeared with the British Saxophone Ensemble. He was Director of the School of Music at Wakefield College from 1995 but has recently taken over as the Director of the Faculty of Arts. Together with composing chamber music for saxophone he is also a busy media composer with commissions from both ITV and Channel 4 television companies. As a Yamaha clinician he has given workshops throughout the UK both solo and with the Northern Saxophone Quartet. |
