Barbara York

(Canada)

Barbara York has been working in both Canada and the U.S. for over 30 years as a Music Director, Teacher, Accompanist and Composer. Her score for the theatre musical Colette in 1980, won her a coveted Dora Mavor Moore Award. Both the Mississauga and Saskatoon Symphony Orchestras have commissioned works from her, and her recent association with the Amati Quartet has resulted in a new, 50 minute scripted children's piece, which is scheduled for recording by the end of 1999. Plans are already in the works for at least two more such pieces for Amati. She has been the recipient of both Canada Council and Laidlaw Foundation Grants for score development, and has been, three times, an "Artist in Residence" at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Her duo partnership with Saxophonist, Glen Gillis, spans almost a decade, and includes both Canadian and International concerts, plus the premiering of her own A Requiem for Lost Loves, for alto sax and piano, at the World Saxophone Congress in Pesaro, Italy.
