Michael Titlebaum

Michael Titlebaum is a freelance composer and saxophonist living in New York's Westchester County, the northern suburbs of New York City. He has performed with a wide variety of internationally known artists, including Branford Marsalis, Clark Terry, Red Rodney, Paquito D'Rivera, Natalie Cole, Mel Torme, Lee Konitz, Cab Calloway, Chuck Mangione and many others. Titlebaum has also played with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Aspen Jazz Ensemble, and he regularly substitutes in the orchestra of the Broadway musical "Cats". He can be heard performing on several CD's, including his own called "Semprini".

Titlebaum has also had an active career as a writer. In October of 1997, he won the Army Blues 25th Anniversary Composition Contest with his piece Ornetti. His Solo for Alto Saxophone and String Quartet was premiered in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in February, 1996. He has been composer-in-residence for several schools in Rochester, New York, where he wrote many new works for young musicians, including pieces for jazz ensemble and concert band. He has also composed pieces for brass quintet, saxophone quartet, large studio orchestra, and he has written incidental music for short films, commercials and a laser light show. He also has several publications to his credit, including a research paper called Ramblin': A Gateway to the Music of Ornette Coleman which was published by the International Association of Jazz Educators in 1997.

Titlebaum earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Eastman School of Music. As a student, he won nine "Deebee" awards from Downbeat magazine, the country's premier jazz journal, for his performances and compositions. He has held faculty positions at the Eastman School, and at Florida A&M University, where he was Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies. He is currently teaching teaching at several schools in Westchester and New York City.
