Fred Stride

Fred Stride finds himself working in many forms of music from jazz to pop to classical. As a composer and arranger he has written many pieces for jazz ensemble as well countless arrangements for various entertainers and performers in almost every musical setting, from small ensembles to big bands and concert bands to full symphony orchestra, for TV, radio, and records. As well as his many jazz compositions, which are played by high school and university bands across Canada and the US, Fred also writes in the nonjazz areas; a recent concert work was a commission from the CBC Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra premiered by the CBC Orchestra and saxophone virtuoso - Julia Nolan.

Highlights of his past commissions include the opening and closing ceremonies of the Calgary Olympics 1988, opening ceremonies of Expo 86, several commissions for the RCMP Band, the 1984 Papal Visit, as well as Dialogue written for Baritone Saxophone and Timpani, performed by Julia Nolan for CBC.

Fred Stride currently directs the jazz ensemble and teaches jazz theory and arranging at the University of British Columbia's School of Music. Fred also works as a clinician, adjudicator and teacher for festivals, camps and jazz workshops across the country.

Fred Stride's works are published by Sierra Music Publications and Tapestry Music. He is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre.
