Charles W. Smith

Charles Smith is Professor of Music at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he teaches theory, composition, flute, and music literature. He holds degrees from the University of Wyoming, New York University, and Peabody College. Honors include a Prize-Winning Award Certificate from the American Guild of Musical Artists, Missouri MTA-MTNA 1984 Composer of the Year, Kentucky KMTA/MTNA 2000 Composer of the Year, and Composition Prize Winner of the Institute for Studies in American Music. In 1999 he received the College and University Research/Creativity awards at Western Kentucky University.

His original works are published by Southern Music Co., Brodt, Pro Art, Barnhouse, Dorn, and Broadman Press. He has also produced important historical editions, including several first editions, of l7th- and 18th-century wind music by Lully, Hotteterre, Quantz, and Véjvanovsky, all published by Musica Rara (France). Dr. Smith's works have been performed in concerts on stage and radio in the United States, Germany, France, Spain and Japan. He has served as composition chair for the Kentucky MTA and Southern Division of MTNA. He was also chair of the biennial composition commissioning project of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors.
