Kawai Shiu

Kawai Shiu was born and raised in Hong Kong. He began his musical studies on the horn and, at the age of twelve, began performing professionally in orchestras. Ever since, Kawai has been active as a composer, conductor, performer, recording producer, journalist, and theory teacher.

He has resided in the United States since 1991. He received degrees from Hong Kong Baptist College and the University of Texas. He has studied composition with Charles Wuorinen, John Harbison, Peter Westergaard, Robert Morgan, Russell Pinkston, Douglas Knehans, Patrick McCreless, Karl Korte, Anthony Vazzana, Christopher Coleman, and Don Chamberlin.

Along with other awards, Kawai Shiu received a special commendation in the Sixth Annual Vienna Modern Masters' orchestral Recording competition, two Frederic Goossen Composition Prizes, the SCI/ASCAP Student Composition Commission award (Southeast Region), the ASCAP Annual Standard Award, the Kent Kennan Scholarship, and the Capstone International Studies Scholarship.

Shiu's music has been widely performed in the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia, and his third compact disc recording is in production.
