David Maslanka was born in New Bedford, Mássachusetts in 1943. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory, and Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Michigan State University where he studied composition with H. Owen Reed. Maslanka has served on the faculties of the State University of New York at Geneseo, Sarah Lawrence College, New York University, and Kingsborough Community college of the City University of New York. He now lives in Missoula, Montana. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States, in Canada, Japan, Australia, and numerous European countries. Maslanka has received three National Endowment for the Arts Composer Awards and five residence fellowships from the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. His works are published by Carl Fischer, Inc., Kjos Music Co., NASA, and Marimba Productions, and include his Sonata for saxophone and piano and Mountain Roads for saxophone quartet. Songbook for alto saxophone and marimba was composed in 1998 for Steven Jordheim and Dane Richeson.
