Halvor Haug

(Norvège - Norway)

Halvor Haug (1952) is described as a modern romanticist within the Nordic symphonic tradition and with a particular taste for the Nordic "sound". His two symphonies and a series of shorter orchestral works have made him quite conspicuous in the musical landscape of his home country.

He scored his first success at the early age of 24, when his Symphonic Picture was premiered by the Orchestra of the Norwegian State Academy of Music. The work has been performed quite frequently since then, and a gramophone recording was made in 1982 by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Showing already a clear-cut profile and a great mastery of the orchestra, he has confirmed and developed these qualities during a series of colourful and acoustically interesting works.

In particular, a great step was taken with his Poema Sonora, commissioned by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1980, where the acoustic texture is clearly more important than the traditional polyphony cultivated in his earlier works. Still more important are his two symphonies, dated 1982 and 1984, respectively. They are related by their long, freely flowing phrases, by their lyrical intensity and by their violent emotional explosions. The 1st Symphony, in 3 movements, was first performed by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1983. The 2nd, written as one extended movement for a richly instrumented orchestra, made a considerable impact when performed by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in the autumn of 1986. Haug is presently completing his 3rd symphony which is a commission by Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.
