Francisco Guerrero (1951-1997)

(Espagne - Spain)

Without doubt, Francisco Guerrero is the most outstanding figure in Spanish music of his generation and defies comparison with any of his international contemporaries. His music is imposing as much to the amateur as to the professional music listener, betraying a force, energy and drive that are only to be found among the greatest. His music has the gift of concentrated energy, concision of discourse, a burning precision of gesture, perfect form in its nudity, rendering unnecessary any kind of preliminaries or periphrases. All his works impress with swift precision. And his severe self-criticism leaves no room for weakness.

Uncompromising and complex, but of an absolute coherence and great unity of style, his language is based on traditional formation, so solid as to withstand any test. On occasions he has been called the "Spanish Xenakis", but his affinities with Greco-French composer are more apparent than real, apart from the force of his expression, the prodigious energy that emanates from sound and the need to discipline his temperamental violence with the rigour of science characteristics common any other. If pressed, one could associate him with Varèse, and already this would suffice to situate him on the margin of all his compatriots.
