Sofia Gubaidulina

(Russia)

Sofia Gubaidulina was born in 1931 in the Tatar Autonomous Republic. She was a student at the Kazan Conservatory and the Moscow Conservatory. Her rnusic style shows the influence of Scriabin and Bartok. Private lessons from Viennese-born Philip Herschkowitz also influenced her early music. Schnittke and Denisov were also students of Herschkowitz, who was himself a student of Webern. In the 1960's Gubaidulina and her colleagues were responsible for introducing serial, aleatoric, sonoristic, and collage techniques into Russian music. This was the first wave of modernism in Russian music since the 1920's. In the 1970's and 1980's Gubaidulina began writing pieces for Russian bassoonist Valeri Popov, who was then well known for his mastery of extended techniques. Dedicated to Valeri Popov, the Duo Sonata was written for two bassoons in 1977. Then, in 1994, the composer scored it for two baritone saxophones.
