Stuart Greenbaum

(Australie - Australia)

Stuart Greenbaum was born in Melbourne in 1966. He graduated with a B.Mus. (Hons.) and M.Mus from the University of Melbourne where he also tutored in Music Techniques. He studied under Brenton Broadstock and Barry Conyngham, and now works as a full-time freelance composer. He has also collaborated extensively with Melbourne poet Ross Baglin.

His choral work, Upon the Dark Water, commissioned by the Australia Council, was premiered at the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House by the Song Company. It has also been performed in the U.K. by the Arcardian Singers, and in the U.S. by I Cantori di New York. Aaron Copland 'In Memoriam' was premiered in the Melbourne Concert Hall by the MSO under Vladimir Verbitsky, and by the WASO under Jorg Mester.

Greenbaum was resident composer with Playbox Theatre Company for two years under an Australia Council grant, and released a CD, Music for Theatre. He has also worked for the MTC, STC, RQTC, and Film Australia.

He was the recipient of the Dorian Le Galliene Award in 1993.

As well as his composition and teaching work, he has taken an interest in minimalist-influenced music, writing his undergraduate thesis on Steve Reich and his PhD thesis on Arvo Pärt. The work on Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays' First Circle was part of a Masters degree in music, completed in 1992.
