Paul Elwood

(U.S.A.)

The music of Paul Elwood has been heralded for it's imagination and "fascinating effects." From avant-theatre works such as Edgard Varese in the Gobi Desert, for velcro tap-dancer and percussion ensemble, to the neo-mystical A Vast Ocean of Promise, for bassoon and chamber ensemble, his music explores an inventive and coloristic sound world that draws in a wide variety of listeners. A bluegrass five-string banjo player, Paul often draws on his American folk roots for compositional material. His compositions have been performed throughout North America and Europe by ensembles such as the Charleston Symphony Orchestra; Tambuco, the Mexican Percussion Quartet; Trio Phoenix; the Wichita Symphony Orchestra; and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra String Quartet. Paul has been a lecturer at the Darmstadt (Germany) Ferienkursen für Neue Musik, and, in the fall of 1998, was the Southern Regional Visiting Composer at the American Academy in Rome.
