| Phanos Dymiotis is considered to be one of the best Cypriot cornposers of his generation. Born in Cyprus in 1965, he continued his musical studies in England where he graduated with honors frorn Cambridge University in 1987 where he studied composition and violin and perfornned under such conductors as Sir Neville Marriner and Jerzy Macsyrniuk. In 1995 he received a doctorate degree in music composition from Princeton University where he studied cornposition with Roberl Sadin and violin with Hamao Fujimara. From 1995 until 1998 he was an assistant professor of music theory and composition at Goucher College in Baltimore. He is currently a member of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Chamber Orchestra.
Dymiotis received numerous awards and scholarships. Specifically, in 1993 he received a scholarship to study composition with George Tsontakis, Bernard Rands and Jacob Druckrnan at Aspen Music School. In 1992 he received the first prize of the University of Cyprus Orchestral Composition Competition. In addition he won Third Prize at the Benjamin Britten International Composer's Competition in 1987 and Second Prize at the Bernard Shore Viola Composition Cornpetition in 1906. His music has been performed in America and Europe. Specifically, his Concertino for piano and chamber orchestra was prerniered in Italy in 1997, followed by a performance the following year in Baltimore with Leon Fleisher conducting and Katherine Jacobson on the piano. He has received commissions from the Cyprus Theater Organization, the Ars Musica Chamber Orchestra in Sicil, Italy and St. Mary's College in Maryland. |
