| Anthony De Ritis recently joined the faculty at Northeastern University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music where he is assisting in the development of a new concentration in Music Technology, and a new major in Multimedia Studies. He completed his Ph.D. in Music Composition at the University of California, Berkeley where he studied composition with Jorge Liderman and Edwin Dugger. For three years De Ritis served as a teaching assistant at Berkeley's Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT). He completed his M.M. in Music Composition from Ohio University and received his B.A. from Bucknell University. In addition, he completed two summers at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France where his primary teachers were Phillipe Manoury, Tristan Murail, and Gilbert Amy.
Dr. De Ritis believes his greatest achievement to date to be his composition, Legerdemain, for large orchestra, Yamaha SY99, and real-time signal processing. According to Kyle Gann, formerly a music critic for The Village Voice, "Legerdemain is a remarkable fusion of powerful symphonic rhetoric and electronic sleight-of-hand." Extremely fond of artistic collaboration, he has often composed for the theater, film, and dance. David Littlejohn, Music and Art Critic for the Wall Street Journal, stated that his score for A Midsummer Night's Dream, a collaboration with guitarist and composer Judah Gold, "recreated Shakespeare's magic in a hip-hop, take-out pizza, Manhattan Mafia world." A Midsummer Night's Dream won De Ritis the 1997 Mark Goodson Prize for Distinguished Theatrical Talent. He also scored the music for Step On It, the 1997 Macworld Arcade Game of the Year. |
