Craig Alberty

(U.S.A.)

Craig Alberty is the Director of Instrumental Activities at Francis Marion University. Born and raised in South Dakota, he holds degrees from the University of South Dakota and Arkansas State University. Before initiating the electronic music program at the University of South Dakota in 1988, he directed high school bands for several years in South Dakota and Iowa. In 1996 he moved to South Carolina to develop a new instrumental music program at FMU. His teaching responsibilities at FMU include: direction of Wind Symphony, Jazz Express, and Chamber Jazz Ensemble; Introduction to Music; Music Theory; Sightsinging and Eartraining; Music Literature; and Applied Lessons.

As a composer, Alberty is represented in the catalogs of several publishers with works for concert and jazz band, brass ensemble, a jazz improvisation method, and several recordings. Performances of his pieces have been heard at various state and national conventions including the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the North American Saxophone Alliance. He also owns and operates an audio production studio specializing in the creation of accompaniment materials for educational publications.

Trained as a trumpet player, Alberty now performs exclusively on wind-controlled synthesizer and is a founding member of the International Wind Synthesis Association. His jazz album "Christmas" is in international distribution through the Walking Frog label.

The Alberty family includes wife Lyn (euphonium, trombone); daughter Erin (piano, trumpet, and a sophomore at Luther College in Iowa); sons Seth (trombone and a junior at Ottumwa, Iowa, High School); Thad (age 4 with an inclination toward percussion that may be influenced by parental intervention); and Grant, our new arrival as of March 3, 1998.
